The Fenway Park Stamp
 |
The back of the Fenway Park stamp reads: "Boston's intimate Fenway Park has the Green Monster, a 37-foot high left field wall. Red Sox fielders who mastered its unpredictable caroms became legends. The home run that ended game six of the 1975 World Series made history there." |
On June 27 Fenway Park further secured its place as one of baseball's all-time treasures when the United States Postal Service released a 34-cent stamp celebrating the Red Sox' home as one of Major League Baseball's 11 "Legendary Playing Fields."
The new stamp depicts an aerial night view of Fenway Park and Postal Service officials say the image is a composite taken from antique postcards from the collection of Ron Menchine, a former Washington Senators announcer who recently wrote the book, "A Picture Postcard History of Baseball." Phil Jordan of Falls Church, Virginia designed the stamp images.
The night shot of Fenway was chosen because it had the best view of the left field wall known as the "Green Monster." Only one other ballpark besides Fenway was depicted at night, that stamp belonging to Cincinnati's Crosley Field.
Besides Fenway Park, only three of the famous ballparks still stand: Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field and Tiger Stadium, which is no longer used for baseball.
The remaining stamps of the "Legendary Playing Field" series are Ebbets Field, Brooklyn; Crosley Field, Cincinnati; the Polo Grounds, New York; Forbes Field, Pittsburgh; the original Comiskey Park, Chicago; and Shibe Park, Philadelphia.
St. Louis' Sportsman's Park is depicted on the header of the 20-stamp sheet, which includes two 34-cent, self-adhesive stamps of each of the other 10 ballparks. The stamps were also released as 6-inch by 4¼-inch post cards.
The Fenway Park stamp was introduced at a ceremony prior to June 27th game between the Red Sox and Tampa Bay Devil Rays. After being available at only the Detroit, Boston, Chicago and New York post offices on June 27, the "Baseball's Legendary Playing Fields" stamps have been available for purchase at post offices nationwide since June 28.
